Marching band Bass Drum help?
I'm 5 feet almost exactly and a sophomore, but it is my first year playing bass drum. I've been in the pit the last 2 years (drumline was full, all returning). I just got the second smallest bass and the last couple practices are killing my lower back. As the only girl, I refuse to look like a sissy, but it hurts. I also have trouble marching and playing, I am decent at both separately, but combining them is proving difficult, especially sideways marching at half tempo, which is part of our opener. Any help?
By the way, I can't see over my drum well at all, causes many hilarious accidents, but is becoming a real problem. I can't switch to a smaller one, because the boy that plays it can barely hold up his own, forget mine. any help with that too?
Hey there, I'm the section leader for the Million Dollar Band Drumline. I'm so glad you asked this question. So you play the 2nd Bass correct? Before I made section leader I carried 5th bass which at the time was our heavist drum :[. So I know what your going through. What you need to do is get a backbrace to support your back. That way no damage will happen to your spine and sciatic nerve. Also, you may want to consider streches before picking your drum up. Also is the harness secured and fitted properly? That also may be part of the problem. Sidestep marching or crabbing can be a little difficult at half time, because you have to stay on your tip toes, and your afraid to fall over, we've all been there. Practice crabbing at home at half time, get used to staying on your toes. As for the can't see over my drum, try to get someone to help fix your harness. I hope this was helpful.
