What food can we give a GSD?
I came on here the other day seeking answers re IAMS dog food. Thank you to everyone that answered!!
We think we have now made our mind up about IAMS and will stop feeding it to her. The only thing is now, we are completely confused about what to feed her.
A few people have mentioned James Wellbeloved but on researching it we have found that they use animals to test it on and we are not too happy about that.
We think we are going to go down the fresh food road as we can't find out enough about other dry foods and at least we will know what is going in to her. The only problem is, what do we give her and how much? We thought things like rice, pasta, veg and meat. Can we give her potatoes? Can we still give her biscuits/mixers or are they bad as well??
As mentioned the other day, she is 19 weeks old and still on 3 meals a day.

Potatoes are a superior food source to rice .
I do feed a premium quality dry food for 2/3 of their diet. The other 1/3 is comprised of raw chicken (wings, backs) & beef, eggs, cottage cheese, yogurt,mackerel/salmon/tuna. In addition I always cook a little extra of what my family is having, for the dogs. This would include any meats/poultry/fish, carrots, green beans, greens,peas, potatoes, yams, rice, barley, etc. Pasta isn't a very good nutritional source so I rarely give it to them. I never give shellfish of any kind. I also avoid the cabbage family (brocoli, brussel sprouts, etc), and corn.
To a lesser extent my dogs get some fresh fruits like apple/pear slices, and they like tomatoes from the garden.
If you want to go to a totally home prepared diet, research some good books on the 'barf' diet for proper proportions and prep.
