Syringe (but not needle) Reuse?
Doing twice-a-day injections from multi-use viles.
The amount of medication is on the order of about 0.25 cc.
Started using some B&D 1cc syringes that have replaceable needles. But come to find out, each injection is leaving about 0.05cc of medication in the syringe (basically all the extra syringe space on the tip that allows the needles to be replaced).
To avoid wasting so much medication, what I'd like to do is draw into the syringe the equivalent of three injections, inject 1/3 of the medication and leave the other 2/3 of the medication in the syringe for later use.
Now like I said, the needles are replaceable, so at a minimum, I would replace the used needle for the 2nd and 3rd injection. But are there any additional precautions I should take, or are there other risks for contamination that I'm not considering?
If the syringe is glass you should be okay but if the syringe is plastic don't chance it, the medication can break down the plastic and cause big problems.Insulin's break down plastic in about 30 minuets.One of the reasons you are to draw up your dose as needed.This is why you should use a disposable syringe and replace it every time.If the empty syringe is kept in the refrigerator after use it can be used 2-3 times as the cool temp keeps the plastic and meds from reacting.Also multiple doses in the syringe is not a good idea as anything from a bump to too much pressure on the plunger could cause you to over inject
