Micing guitar amps?
In live performance for rock band, when they mic guitar and bass amps, I believe that there are two ways to do it. One is to put mics on right front of the amps, or just connect amps to a mixer with chords. Is this true and which would sound better?
Mic'ing is the most common way a guitar signal is brought into the soundboard. In general it can sound very good, but it suffers from the drawbacks of possible feedback (uncommon if the club has a good system) and bleed-through to other mic's.
Most amps' line outs don't sound as good as the sound from the mic in front of the speakers. It can be if the amp is designed to do it, or if you have additional processing stuff (speaker simulator, etc), but this is not very common. Some guitarists will do both - provide a line out and a mic'd signal so the soundman can blend them to get the best of both worlds.
The line out method is better from a soundman's perspective because volume on stage is actually a bad thing. The only two instruments that *have* to be mic'd are the drums and vocals, but if one instrument (like the guitar amp) is turned up too loud, all of the mic's will only hear the guitar amp, and this destroys the quality of the sound. It's really really common, because guitar players like to turn up too loud. It really pisses sound guys off.
If the only mic's on stage are for the drums and vocals, and otherwise there is no volume on stage, it allows you to get the best possible sound on drums and vocals - the two most important things you want to hear when you go to a show. Drums give power, rhythm, and structure, and you gotta hear the lyrics/melody, so there you go.
I'm actually in the middle of designing a new rig, one that can be mic'd or go line out, and have the same quality of sound. It ain't easy - I want the analog warmth and quality of discrete components instead of the digital sound of something like Line 6, so it's going to take me a little while to design the pedals and preamp....
