What is the difference in a built in pre amp in a record player and...?
not having one in a record player?
I don't want to get the wrong thing. And I don't know anything about record players or speakers.
The one I want has a auxiliary input for computer speakers. But what is a pre amp? And what is the difference between having one and not having one?
the pre-amp is to boost the tiny signal from the record pickup, to a level that can then be passed to an external amp, which then feeds the loudspeakers.
A regular amp needa a certain signal level at its input for it to work properly. Think of it like this - if you whisper into a microphone, what do you get out of the speakers on any PA system? Answer - just as much background noise as voice sound. But, if you speak at normal level into a microphone, you improve your "signal to noise ratio" - which is a good thing!
So - bottom line - pre-amp good - and it MAY raise the record deck output enough to feed a set of computer speakers - you will have to try it and see.
