What Are Road Cases Made Of?
The most famous users of road cases, those boxes that are used to store equipment and other particularly sensitive valuables when they are shipped from place to place, are musicians. Groups of these cases, all decorated with stickers, have played a part in many a film featuring a rock band. But the reality is that such cases are used for transporting more than just musical instruments. As a matter of fact, they can be used to move just about anything that owners perceive to require protection when in transit. And to reflect this, such cases can be made of a wide variety of materials.
Basic road cases are composed of different protective layers. First is an innermost foam layer, which can be ordered to conform precisely to the shape of the equipment it is meant to protect in custom-made cases. The second is made of high-grade laminate, and the cases' edges and corners are protected by thick layers of zinc.
But in the industry, there can be quite a bit of variance from these standards. Some manufacturers prefer to use advanced materials such as Duralite or ABS plastic instead of laminate, for example. Many others, in the interest of conserving weight, make use of an aluminum framework.
Other manufacturers of road cases use crushed velvet foam interiors or aluminum edging as an alternative to zinc. Lastly, some offer a special plastic exterior option that makes use of waterproof materials to confer that level of protection for clients who require it.
