HELP!! What are balance cables?
I just bought a condenser mic. I figured out that I need phantom power for it to connect to the computer and work properly. So I dont really know what I need for the microphone to work properly on my computer. Can anyone tell me what I need and what balance cables are, and if I need them.
A condenser mic is a professional mic, and it does require phantom power (+48V) to function properly. I suspect that the output of the microphone looks like three pins inside of a circle. This is an XLR output, and it's used on professional-level equipment. It's called balanced because the audio signal is sent twice, once normally and once inverted, over different wires.
If you get the proper adapters, for your purposes, you won't need a balanced cable. However, this does not solve your phantom power problem. I know of no good way of getting phantom power without a professional sound board or some specialized equipment.
I would recommend switching to a more conventional computer mic, unless high sound quality is your number one priority.
